Tourtiere (Meat Pie)
When the weather gets cold and snowy all we want in our house is comfort food. Delicious, buttery and full of warm spices comfort food. When I was in high school our family hosted a Katimavik participant who taught us how to make homemade Tourtiere, a dish that meets all the comfort food criteria.
From my kitchen to yours:
Tourtiere (tweaked a little)
Ingredients:
1 lb. ground lean beef
½ lb. ground pork
1 small onion, finely chopped
½ tbsp. olive oil
⅓ cup warm water
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp rosemary
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp thyme
½ tsp sage
1 batch of pie pastry or 4 prepared Tenderflake pie shells
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In frying pan heat oil over medium high heat.
Add onion and sauté until soft.
Add ground beef and pork to the frying pan and sauté until browned.
Drain fat from pan and return to heat.
Add seasoning and water to pan with the meat mixture and cook on medium heat for 25 minutes.
Turn mixture out into a pastry prepared pie plate, top with layer of pastry and cut two slits in the top to release steam.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 30 minutes
**Serve with delicious red pepper jelly or our favourite...ketchup
